4 Myths about
divorce and annulment
1. Divorced Catholics are
excommunicated: No!
Divorced Catholics are considered separated from their spouses. As
long as they don't remarry without an annulment, they are in full communion
with the Church, with access to all the sacraments. Divorced Catholics
who remarry without an annulment are not excommunicated, but are not in full
communion and may not receive the Eucharist.
2.
Children of an annulled marriage are illegitimate: Absolutely not!
The children were conceived in a legal, though not sacramental, marriage.
3.
Annulment means the marriage never existed:
Annulment doesn't erase history. It states only that the
sacramental element, as God intended, was never present in the marriage.
4.
Annulments are granted if you pay more or know the right people:
All annulments are processed without bias. They are not for sale.
What you pay is only a portion of the total cost of maintaining the tribunal
and paying the staff.
